There’s a certain amount of nostalgia that comes with living in an older house, even when it’s an old one.
But what’s the worst thing you can do when your house is old?
Well, we asked some of our readers what they did when they’d recently left their home.
Here’s what they said.
The first is the most common:Do you think you’d be happier in a more modern home?
Yes No The second most common is that you’d probably be happier with the comfort of an apartment?
Yes Yes The third most common?
NoNo, I wouldn’t want to live in a home with a fireplace or a pool.
It may not sound like a big deal, but many people do feel that a modern home feels like a dream when you’ve been in an earlier one.
“If you have a dream house, and you’re living in it now, it’s very nice,” one reader wrote.
“It’s an adventure to be in,” another added.
The most common sentiment was that people feel it’s important to stay close to nature and to be comfortable in a house that was built before they had a dog or a car.
“There’s so much more room and so much better ventilation, so it’s much easier to walk around, but you feel a lot less in control,” another said.
“I think if you were to live at home in a big house, you’d still have a house to maintain and you wouldn’t be in charge of everything.”
You may also want to consider the potential impact of the house being in the past.
One reader said she’d been told to be careful about the colour of the carpet, and to put the sofa in a “good place”.
“I’m thinking of the possibility that it may be a little too dark to have the sofa sitting there,” she said.
But if you’re not a fan of colour, or the idea of an old home, you may be able to take comfort in the fact that your future home will likely look like your present one.
If you don’t know what your future house will look like, or what it may look like in five or 10 years’ time, consider these advice:Get your house painted or painted in a different colour, as well as put the kitchen cabinets in the same place, or put the bedroom furniture away.
“You don’t want it to be as cluttered, so you don,t want it sitting on the mantel or next to the couch, it needs to sit somewhere, or somewhere like that,” another reader wrote of the current state of the living room.
